FAQs

  • What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a ‘mineral pitch’ that has formed over many millions of years, and was developed as a healthy supplement by ancient Ayurvedic practitioners. The Ayurvedic ‘whole body’ tradition (the ancient holistic science of herbal remedies) stretches back 3,000 years to when it was first developed in the region that is today’s modern-day India, and offered remedies for several diseases, particularly chronic diseases, with early Ayurvedic writings from the Charaka Samhita describing Shilajit as a cure for all diseases as well as a ‘Rasayana’ (a rejuvenator) that in the Ayurvedic tradition professes to increase longevity. As continents have moved and mountains have formed, trees, plants and other organic matter have been trapped by layers of rock and sediment under enormous pressure. This pressure, combined with extreme temperature changes and microbial activity, has transformed the trapped organic matter into a dark, tar-like substance, which exudes from today’s mountain slopes during the warmer weather, generally at high altitudes of over 4,000m.

  • Where does Bhutan Shilajit come from?

Our raw Shilajit is harvested from the high altitude regions of Bhutan (mainly Chukha, Punakha & Paro Dzongkhangs areas) through farmer collectives, and processed by one of Bhutan’s leading pharmaceutical groups, who in turn are regulated by the Bhutan Drug Regulatory Authority. Collection points can change every season, depending on climate and accessibility, but raw Shilajit is usually found at altitudes of 2,000m-5,000m above sea level.

  • When was Bhutan Shilajit first discovered?

Shilajit has been a mainstay of the Ayurvedic medicine tradition for several thousand years. According to local legend, Shilajit was discovered in Bhutan by local villagers who observed large white monkeys migrating to the mountains in the summer months, where they were seen chewing a semi-soft substance from between layers of rock. The villagers attributed the monkeys’ great strength, longevity and wisdom to the substance and began to consume it themselves, reporting a wide range of health improvements including greater energy, digestive relief, increased sex drive, improved memory & cognition, & more.

  • What is Bhutan Shilajit's Formulation?

Shilajit is available in several forms, including powdered, capsule, resin, liquid, amongst others. Our Shilajit is supplied as a purified water extract in a 70% w/w liquid formulation - this means that for any given amount of our purified Shilajit extract, 70% is purified Shilajit, and 30% is purified water. We have tried and tested several formulations on the market today, and find this liquid formulation the most convenient - it can be supplied to you and used in a dropper bottle format, which we think is more convenient for your daily requirements than a solid, hard resin or thick tar formulation which requires a spoon or spatula and which is less able to be measured accurately. With our dropper bottle formulation you can apply pure Shilajit drop by drop, and know that your intake is consistent.

  • What is the Recommended Daily Dose for Bhutan Shilajit?

Dosages vary from practitioner to practitioner, but we recommend 300-500mg per day. This can be taken as 3-5x drops, twice per day - ideally once in the morning and once in the evening. It is best to take Premium Bhutan Shilajit on an empty stomach, and with warm filtered water or milk.

Shilajit from the Himalayas generally contains over 85 minerals in ionic form, trace elements, vitamins, fulvic acid, humic acid and many other bioactive components. It is these compounds and their combination that has led Ayurvedic medicine to champion Shilajit as a healing compound for many ailments, which in Ayurvedic literature including diabetes management, urinary tract disorder treatments, whole body rejuvenation, cognitive improvement, muscle strengthening, aiding digestion, appetite stimulant, nausea & vomiting treatment, anaemia prevention, anti-aging treatment, cough relief… and many more!! (Note: we should stress though, that these benefits and uses are specifically mentioned in Ayurvedic writings, and that we cannot offer validation for any of these claims due to a lack of relevant, western-based research and clinical trials.)

  • What Benefits do Bhutan’s Locals Receive for Harvesting Bhutan Shilajit?

There are a range of Shilajit suppliers in the Himalayan region, with some processing and packing far from the original source and in less than ideal conditions. This can have negative consequences for both the Shilajit itself and for the local collectors who harvest it. We work with a well-established, well-resourced, and Bhutan Drug Regulatory Authority-approved supplier in Bhutan so that we can offer the most sustainable product possible. Quality control practices in harvesting, transport, and processing also mean that our suppliers provide training to local farmers involved in the sustainable collection of medicinal plants, including Shilajit, and post-harvest care. This helps protect both the welfare of the local farmers as well as ensure consistent raw material quality is maintained from season to season.

  • How does Bhutan Shilajit Effect Positive Change?

We take our responsibilities to the local people of Bhutan and to the earth’s natural resources seriously, and have strived to create a product that is sustainable as possible. This work is continual and means that we will constantly be improving on everything from our partnerships to our packaging. To ensure we remain sustainable, we have partnered with the charity ‘Earthly’ (www.earthly.org) to offset our carbon footprint, and plant a number of trees (calculated according to Earthly’s offset audit team) for each product sold. We are also very aware of our responsibility to the local people of Bhutan, and have partnered with local Bhutanese charities to donate 5% of all net profits from sales of our Bhutan products to allow them to continue their work in the Bhutan community.

  • What Testing Takes Place to Ensure Product Purity?

Our raw materials are produced under a controlled pharmaceutical environment, and by an entity regulated by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Bhutan. We also carry out testing for detection of any heavy metals and mycotoxins here in the UK through a UK-regulated third party testing lab. This lab is IS09001, UKAS, & ORETO accredited. We carry out these tests on a per-batch basis, and are happy to provide copies of the relevant testing certificates on request.

  • Where is Your Bhutan Shilajit Packaged?

All production takes place in Bhutan through our partnership with one of Bhutan’s leading pharmaceutical groups, with the product being shipped to, and bottled in, the UK. We carry out our lab tests with a nationally-accredited lab in the UK, and all of our bottles, caps, label printing, and box packaging is done in the UK to ensure products follow UK national regulations.

  • Are Your Dropper Bottles Food-Safe?

Our dropper bottles are made from amber glass which offers the highest protection against UV light, making it perfect for our Bhutan Shilajit. Our dropper bottles also come with a ‘tamper-evident pipette seal’ so you can see if a bottle has been opened. We seal all our bottles in a clean environment, ensuring that you receive a fresh & unadulterated product - do not use the bottle if you receive it with a broken pipette seal, and let us know as soon as possible if you encounter this.

  • The Pipette doesn’t Reach the Very Bottom of My Dropper Bottle So How do I Make Sure I Get Every Last Drop?

Due to their design, dropper bottle pipettes don’t reach the very bottom of their bottles. But we don’t want you to waste any of this valuable product! So when the pipette won’t pick up any more, we recommend adding a couple of teaspoons of hot water to the bottle and shaking gently so that you can pour out the remaining Shilajit - it will be more of a liquid than the original product, but this won’t affect its use. When there really is nothing left, our bottles can be reused for other uses if you want - we just recommend you clean it out with some hot water before reusing.

  • What Scientific Research Has Been Conducted on Shilajit?

There is a large amount of research that has been carried out on Shilajit, both from a traditional medicine and from a western scientific perspective. This research can be found at different sources online with a reliable, unbiased source for all research papers being the US National Library of Medicine (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/).

  • Can I Take Bhutan Shilajit Continuously?

As with all supplements, the effects can sometimes be more beneficial where you stop taking them for a short while before restarting your regimen. This can prevent your body from becoming too familiar with the supplement, and help to increase its effectiveness. Some practitioners recommend taking Shilajit for a 2-week period (in accordance with the recommended dose), and then taking a 2-week break before restarting a new cycle.

  • Why Doesn’t My Dropper Bottle Appear to be Completely Full to the Bottle Neck?

We meticulously ensure that each of our bottles contains what it says on the label - 50g of Bhutan Shilajit (we even give you a little extra just to make sure!). We use 50ml dropper bottles because we think this provides our customers with the most convenient use method. However, as our unique formulation is a thick liquid, 50g in weight is not 50ml in volume, and therefore your bottle may not appear full. Rest assured though, there’s just over 50g of Bhutan Shilajit goodness in each of our bottles!

  • Can I Use the Dropper Pipette as a Stirrer for My Dose into My Drink?

Yes you can! Be careful not to stir too vigorously as the dropper pipette is glass and should not be hit hard against any hard objects (the side of the glass or mug for example), in case of breakage. Stirring with the dropper pipette will also help clean any Shilajit from within the pipette - if you are stirring into anything other than filtered water however, you should make sure that no liquid is within the pipette when placed back into the dropper bottle, so as to keep the Shilajit within the bottle as pure as possible.
